Had a total blast playing live in the Royal Oak Holiday Magic Parade this morning - just love seeing all my friends and neighbors in the crowd!! I think this parade gets better every year. This was our 4th year in the parade - we played our Holiday hit "I want a big fat cookie for Christmas". Wow - had a great show at the Music Box on Saturday morning for our annual "Rock-o-ween". Really love playing at that place - acoustically perfect!!
Also have some great news - we FINALLY went into the studio and started recording our 5th CD!! We nailed down 6 songs and are going back for more - LOVE IT!! Should be released early in 2010 along with our 300th performance!!! Wow - that's alot of gigs!! xoxo A.Joy

Nothing says summer like camping in the great outdoors. We went on group campsite with 53 people and had a blast. In the beginning everyone laughed at me and my non-stick electric frying pan (that I cooked everything in) - but by the end of the stay - they were itching to use it!! The kids and I watched part one of the Beatles Anthology last night - wow - it was so awesome!! Always have been one of my favorite bands. Great footage. Loved singing along (I think it was driving the kids crazy). I pretty much know every word to every Beatles song. Can't believe they wrote so many hit songs. Here's a picture of Candy Band after our performance at the Fowlerville Fair. We had so much fun and enjoyed the sounds, sights and smells of the fair (kids screaming on rides, funnel cakes and pigs!!) Tonight we are off to the Detroit Zoo for Memberfest. We will be back there again next week for our August 5 concert - don't wanna miss that one. Oh yeah, Plymouth on Wed (July 29) at noon and Madison Heights Library on Friday (July 31) at 11:30am - busy, busy, busy and loving it!! xoxo A.Joy

We just returned from an awesome road trip. The Fowlerville Fair was cute and fun (although one local lady did not understand Candy Band and actually swore at our children - hhhmmm - imagine that!!). Then we were off to Saugatuck to have some Mommy/Daughter fun (no boys came along). We ended the trip playing in Holland and had a huge crowd and were already asked back next year. On the way home, Skittles and I (along with our daughters) stopped at Dutch Village to try on wooden shoes (ouch!!). Wednesday Candy Band is off to play at the Fowlerville Family Fair. As you can see - it is as old as some of our classic songs (Susannah, Clementine and Working on the Railroad!!). Wow - just returned from a great vacation on the west side Michigan!! My family rode the "rails to trails" from Mears to New Era - 22 miles total!! We rode through farms, woods and small towns!! We ended up at a dairy farm and had lunch which included a "bottomless cup of milk". We chose chocolate!! xoxo A.Joy

One of the last Cultural Arts Assemblies I booked for my school was the Woodward Corridor Musicians. They were amazing. We were standing around talking about who our influences were growing up - I of course said Led Zep and the lady on the 2nd from the right (the viola player) told me that she performed with them twice when they came through town years ago. She was hired with other orchestra members - as LZ always hired locals when they passed through town. That means she played on Kashmir!!! When she told me that, I literally got goosebumps!!! ROCK ALERT!! Went to Vegas a couple of weeks ago and in addition to Cirque de Soilel, gambling and sunning myself, I did manage to go hiking with my niece Jade. We hiked about 3 miles across desert like terrain to get to this "rock formation". It was 95 and sunny!! Speaking of ROCK - we are playing at the Henry Ford this Saturday, May 16 - at 1:30 for the ROCK STARS CARS AND GUITARS EXHIBIT - hope to see you there!!! xoxo A.Joy

I wanted to post another pic of our vacation. This is Laurel Falls in the Smoky Mountains. I thought they were quite beautiful but scary when we arrived there on our "be careful, many steep vertical drops" hike. There was really no guard rail and as you can see - don't step too far back when taking a photo. I am sitting on the bench with one of my daughters in this photo - I was quite nervous. Wow - just returned back from a great vacation with my family. We went to the Smoky Mountains, Cumberland Gap and Mammoth Caves. The weather ranged from 82 to this beautiful scene complete with 14 inches of snow up on the Newfound Gap in the Smokies. Didn't matter to us - it was beautiful and when we were cold, we retreated to our private mountainside hot tub! What a beautiful part of the country!!! xoxo A.Joy

National Library Week Concert: Candy Band

They're back! Candy Band- the famous Detroit rock group for kids- will return to AADL to perform a live concert. You have never heard ‘The Alphabet Song’ or ‘It’s Your Birthday’ played like this! Candy Band is comprised of four Detroit area stay-at-home moms who were sick to death of “whiny music” for kids; so in 2003, they formed the first kid’s band that really rocks. With influences like the Ramones and Iggy Pop, they quickly attracted attention from The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, the London Times, People Magazine, The Today Show and many other national and international media outlets. The band plays hard rocking versions of nursery rhymes, movie themes and other children's favorites. They were a smash when they appeared at AADL in September – do not miss them this time around!

We played a show at the Detroit Derby Girls roller hockey game last night. It was so much fun! Roller hockey is awesome... I think we may have spawned a new crop of 8 - 12 year old female roller hockey enthusiasts (our daughters). If you have a chance, check out the next event. I think they play monthly. Last night's match was a sell out. Oh, and Almond Joy rocked the national anthem... great job!

Today I spent the day at school with a mime that I booked for a cultural arts performance. Pictured here is the world famous Marcel Marceau - but our mime's name was Toma. Been having a great time on Winter Break with the kids. We went to the Howell Nature Center on Monday www.howellnaturecenter.org and saw so many cool animals including the snowy owl pictured here! They had at least 8 kinds of owls, tons of hawks, an eagle, deer, beavers, woodchucks, opossums and even a coyote!! When we visited with the coyote we were informed that we could howl with him if we wanted. So we went by his enclosure and all howled together - it was so cool (a howling good time!!). This nature center rehabilitates injured animals and will release them back into the wild if able. What a great place - it's a must see attraction for any animal lover in the Detroit area!! xoxo A.Joy

Wow! Tonight our family spent a couple of hours riding "The Fridge". It is at the Waterford Oaks Park in Oakland County (Pontiac to be exact). You fly 30 MPH + down this thing. Wow - Candy Band played two shows at an all-kindergarten elementary school in Saline, Michigan today. We played one before lunch and one after lunch. Almond Joy forgot to bring the sound system power system (left it sitting on her family room floor - ddduuuhhhh!) so the custodian came up with one and became our soundman!!! Yeahhh - what a trooper he was!!! We didn't have the lunch in the picture - instead we went to a cool pub in Saline and had stuffed portabellas, salads, salmon burgers and cheese-beer soup!!! Wow - our gig at Northwood was wild and crazy - they never let us down at that school - I think punk rock kids are born and bred there!! Anyways, we debuted some songs that we are working and the "Monkey Song" is a hands-down hit!! Alot of people told me their kids were still singing it the next day!! Wow - sorry I haven't posted in such a long time. Been busy during the holidays. Went to a wine party, hosted a cookie exchange, hosted an open house, hosted Christmas day and then lots more!! I am ready to take it all down and get on with the New Year!! The band has lots of fun gigs coming up, I will try and get them posted in the next few days - we are eager to play some of our new songs. Hello,I wrote to you all earlier, when adding our name to the mailing list, but I just have to say again what a great time we had rocking it out with your band this morning. It was our first Candy Band concert, after several failed attempts to make it your performances, and my girls (age 1 & 3 ) LOVED the show. My three year old daughter was the one dancing with you at front center stage the whole concert (wearing an orange trick or treat shirt and glitter jeans).Anyway, I am a stay-at-home mom as well, and let me just say that you are an inspiration to women everywhere. My girls insisted upon buying a copy of every one of your CD's as we walked out the show and even managed to pick out a t-shirt as well. We came home and drew pictures of the band, and candy monsters and rocked out all day to your tunes. Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a gift you gave us today. I just hope that we can see another performance soon. Until then, I wondered if there was any way I could get you all to sign a couple pictures for my girls. Their names are "S" & "K" and they are now quite possibly your biggest fans! They want to hang them in their rooms. I just want to say that Candy Band played 2 awesome shows yesterday. First thing in the morning we played at the Music Box in the Max (Detroit Symphony Orchestra Complex) and had a blast. We dressed up in Halloween costumes, debuted 2 new songs and had a huge crowd that was really into our music. After the show, I took my daughter and some of her friends to see the real DSO play scary Halloween music. The highlight of that show was when the symphony played the theme from "Jaws".
In the evening, the band played in Howell, Michigan at "The Legend of Sleepy Howell". It was a downtown event with the street closed off and lots of trick or treating, haunted alley, moonbounces, donuts and of course Candy Band right in the middle of it all. At first we were pretty freaked out about playing outside in the cold, but it really wasn't so cold after all. We had a huge crowd there and everyone was really into our music. So - all that work and it surely was worth it!!! Have a great Sunday!!! xoxo A.Joy

Wow - I spent the night at the Detroit Zoo on Friday night with my daughters Brownie Troop. We were led on a night tour of the zoo (with no flashlights allowed). We watched the monkeys and polar bears sleep and observed the barn owl "wide awake". We even went into the seal tube in the dark - that was super cool!! We had breakfast with the seals as well. The staff was great - we had s'mores at 11pm and watched "Jungle Book" on a giant wall at 11:30 (complete with large bowls of popcorn). In the morning - they opened the walls of our room and they turned into large windows and we could see the zoo waking up!! If you ever get a chance to go on one of these trips - DO IT!!! xoxo A. I just saw the Dad of the year riding his bike by my house yesterday. This man was riding his own bike while holding on to his kids bike (with no kid on it) by the handlebars. I believe he was taking his kids bike to school so the kid could ride home on his bike. How awesome is that??? xoxo A.Joy

Anyone that know A.Joy - knows that I love puppies!! My girls and I went to the mall on Saturday and had to stop in the pet store. The guy working there "Tyler" asked us if we wanted to play with any puppies. So we decided to each pick a puppy to play with for 15 minutes each or so. I decided to pick the bulldog puppy. He was sooooo cute until he started chewing on my keys, purse, jeans and new Dr. Martin shoes!! Boy - this dog would have destroyed my house if I took him home. Oh well, at least we had fun for a little while. When we decide to get a dog - I think we will find a "2 yr old". xoxo A.Joy

Ok - I am in desparate need of some serious shut-eye!! My daughter is on the end of a "cough spasm" thingy so I have been getting up every 4-5 hours to give her broth. I took my daughter to the doctor today - she has been coughing and is totally congested. The doctor diagnosed her with acute sinusitus. As the doctor was looking in her ears and nose, I became curious. I have always wanted to look into one of those instruments so I could see what they were talking about. Ok - here's a time saving tip for you: My daughter (who is 8 years old) wants to get the most sleep that she can in the morning. Her solution??? Wear the clothes that she will wear to school the next day - to bed!! She has even gone as far as putting on a top, skirt and knee socks and going to sleep. Her rationalization of this "I can sleep an extra 5 minutes in the morning!!". I have put my foot down on this and will absolutely not allow her to wear shoes to bed though!! I must admit - when I was her age, I used to hate to make my bed - so I slept in a sleeping bag on top of my bed (that was made). Ah, the things we do to save time!! So I recently bought a new Schwinn Voyager. I love my new bike. I had a double basket installed on the back so I can take it to the grocery store. Here's the problem: Everytime I go to the store, I get carried away and buy too much stuff. Luckily, my husband gave me a bungee cord "just in case". Thank goodness for that!! Today I went to Trader Joes and bought milk, eggs, 2 pizzas, veggies, breakfast bars, frozen chicken, pancake mix, teriyaki sauce, lunchmeat and this weird green pea snack. I honestly didn't think I was going to make it home (1 mile). But - lo and behold - the eggs made it just fine (everything else is a little smushed though). Rock on and save gas!! xoxo A.Joy

My kids and I have been listening to a CD I've had laying around for awhile. "Saturday Morning Cartoons Greatest Hits". It was released in the mid 90's. The funny thing about this CD... it's a recording of songs from cartoons in the mid 60's - 70's... the cartoons I used to watch. The kids love "H.R. Puffenstuff", "Hong Kong Phooey" and "Josie and the Pussycats". These songs were remade by bands like Sublime, Sponge and Liz Phair. The kids and I have looked up some of the old shows on YouTube, and I keep saying "Man, these shows were WEIRD". What's with the Banana Splits? Sigmund and the Seamonsters? The Bugaloos? Remember??????

Uck - the mosquitos are so bad in Michigan right now - I must have 30 bites on me. Cortisone is my best friend!! I even have one on the front and center of my neck (quite lovely!!). We went camping last weekend to Metamora and they were extremely thick there!! What to do? They must love the taste of sweet Almond Joy!!
